Saarland |
|
Where being part of Europe has become a way of life. |
|
The County of Saarpfalz was created
on 1 January 1974 when the local boundaries and administrative districts
in Saarland were reformed.
It is the legal successor to
the former counties of St. Ingbert and Homburg, and the administration
is based in the county and university town of Homburg. The name
“County of Saarpfalz” goes back to the history of the
district, which used to belong to Rhine-Bavaria.
|
 |
The County of Saarpfalz now has
158,000 inhabitants, and its total area of 420 square kilometres includes
the towns of Homburg, St. Ingbert, Bexbach and Blieskastel, as well
as the parishes of Kirkel, Mandelbachtal and Gersheim. Situated in
the south-east of Saarland, the County of Saarpfalz has a 30 km boundary
with neighbouring France.
Whilst there are numerous processing industries in the northern part
of the County of Saarpfalz, including major companies such as Bosch
and Michelin, the southern part of the county is devoted more to agriculture
and has particularly beautiful countryside.
